Pink the Rink: A Month of Wins and Giving Back

The Jr. Lightning wore pink all October in support of breast cancer, raised $1,500 at a packed Pink the Rink game and won five of eight league games to keep climbing in OWHL U22AA Elite action.

Two Durham West Junior Lightning players, a goalie in a blue and white mask and a skater in a black helmet, smile and lean together in a hallway. Both wear the team's pink jerseys with a breast cancer awareness ribbon.

October was a month to be proud of in Durham West. The Junior Lightning laced up in pink all month in support of breast cancer, filled the stands for a special home game and kept stacking up wins in OWHL U22AA Elite League action.

Pink the Rink

On October 18th, more than 300 fans packed the rink for our Pink the Rink game against the Leaside Wildcats. A raffle for a prize basket raised $1,500 for the cause. On the ice, the Jr. Lightning gave the crowd a finish worth cheering, edging Leaside 2–1 in overtime. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket, donated a prize or came out to show their support.

A Month of Momentum

The Junior Lightning finished October 5–2–1 in league play. They shut out London 2–0 on October 3rd, beat Leaside 4–1 on the road on the 15th and won back-to-back overtime games on October 17th (5–4 over North York) and 18th. Even the setbacks showed this team’s fight: a 5–4 overtime loss to Cambridge on October 25th came down to the final shift. The Jr. Lightning closed the month with a 4–2 win in North York on October 31st.

Looking Ahead

The team keeps improving and climbing the standings. The Jr. Lightning host the Barrie Sharks on November 8th and visit the Oakville Hornets on November 12th. Thank you to our families, coaches and supporters for a month that gave back as much as it gave us. Go Lightning!
